MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — Point Park University claimed the 2020-21 River States Conference Commissioner’s Cup in a narrow race over WVU Tech and University of Rio Grande (Ohio). The Pioneers’ athletic department edged the Golden Bears and RedStorm by a single point for the award that measures the overall top athletic department across all the RSC championship sports.

Standings for the RSC Commissioner’s Cup take into account each school’s finish in the RSC championship sports that it sponsors. The 2020-21 standings scored the top seven sports from each school. Points are awarded on a scale of 10 with 10 points for first place in a sport, nine for second and so on. For sports that have more than 10 schools participating, no points are earned for schools finishing below 10th place.

Standings are tabulated based on regular-season finish in the sports that have regular-season standings. For sports that do not have regular-season standings, the championship meet or tournament is used. Postseason finishes were used in men’s and women’s basketball since COVID-19 did not allow for regular-season standings as in past years.

Point Park claimed the narrow victory with 66 total points with WVU Tech and Rio Grande tying for second place and very close behind with 65 points each. The top five of the 13 conference schools was rounded out with Indiana University East taking fourth place with 62 points and Midway (Ky.) University placing fifth with 60 points.

Point Park claimed a top score of 10 points in four different sports — women’s soccer, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field. The Pioneers took second-place finishes in men’s cross country and men’s outdoor track and field and also had eight points for men’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball.

WVU Tech took home a conference-high five first-place finishes getting 10 points each for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball. The Golden Bears also had third in men’s indoor track and field and fourth in women’s indoor track and field.

Rio Grande had seven sports that finished first or second in the conference including first-place showings from men’s outdoor track and field and softball. The RedStorm were second place in men’s soccer, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field and women’s outdoor track and field.

IU East earned 10 points for first place in women’s tennis and also finished second in women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, women’s golf and men’s tennis. Midway took fifth place with championships in men’s and women’s golf, second place in women’s cross country and eight points each for volleyball, women’s indoor track and field and softball.
